Review: Deathless

Deathless Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I wanted to love this book. Honestly, I did. It checks many of the boxes that I traditionally love in a book. It is based on mythology. It is transported into the real world. It has the mythic interacting with the real. The universe of the story impacts the story. It has trickster god characteristics.

The first third of the book was enjoyable, but then as the story progressed, it just became more dense to me and the joy was slowly draining from my reading. The story wound up being too much of a parable / allegory for my own enjoyment. Or perhaps it was just a bit too Russian in its style.

That said, I can definitely see how many others enjoy it. I have run across many other books that are similar where friends that I normally strongly agree with love a book, but for one reason or another, I do not.
