Review: River of Stars

River of Stars River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I shall spend the next few days mourning the completion of this book. The characters. The universe. The plot. I grew to love them deeply and I shall miss them. I wish that I could read this book, and its predecessor, again for the first time.

I was hesitant to read this novel after enjoying the first one so much and finding out that this one did not have the same characters, but was instead set much later in the same universe. I did give it a shot because I had enjoyed that universe so much and I am so glad that I did.

I love characters that are multi-dimensional and these are plentiful throughout this story. I love plots that are internally consistent, but not fully predictable and this story fulfills that wish. I love universes that impact the story itself; where the world the story is set in does not fade into the background, but imprints itself into the fabric of the plot and impacts the lives of the characters. This universe does that.

If you know Guy Gavriel Kay, you know what you are getting into when you read the book. Not everything is sunshine and butterflies, but then again, neither is life.
